- Review of Pricing System for Long Term Residential Care Facilities, published 4th June, fails to implement urgent action required to address fundamental failings with the Nursing Home Support Scheme, given fees payable under the funding model are not commensurate with reality of nursing home care costs. Post review publication, NHI lobbied to inform re such and reiterate urgent necessity for introduction of a fit for purpose funding model.
- The BDO / NHI Annual Survey 2019 / 2020, published 28th April, informs capital and operation expenditure deficits are threatening the viability of nursing homes, with smaller nursing homes in particular threatened with closure. It highlights surge in staff costs not commensurate with fees payable under Nursing Homes Support Scheme (Fair Deal).
- Engagement was initiated by NHI regarding rollout of a booster vaccination programme for nursing home residents to enhance protection against Covid19.
- The Temporary Assistance Payment Scheme (TAPS) provided vital financial support to enable nursing homes implement intensified infection prevention control measures to prevent and manage Covid19. The scheme ended 30th June 2021. NHI supported grassroots campaign and Executive engaged in representations to every TD advancing necessity for continuation of the scheme, to ensure the intensified infection prevention control measures it supported could continue to be implemented.
- Advancing the necessity to ensure the Covid19 Nursing Homes Expert Panel recommendations are implemented to achieve structural reform within the nursing home sector. NHI advocacy focused on: Integration: Ensure residents have access to community care services vital to support their health and social care needs; Resourcing: Introduce funding model commensurate with nursing home care costs; Workforce: Develop comprehensive workforce strategy to concentrate on attracting and retaining staff
