- Inflationary Pressures- NHI made several representations to government outlining the urgent crisis in the nursing home sector caused by the current cost environment and the need for the state to resource the sector with a funding mechanism.
- NHI wrote to Minister Butler again highlighting the urgency of the impact of rising inflation was having on nursing homes and the sustainability of the sector as a whole.
- NHI met with Minister Butler and Dept of Health Officials to outline the emergency that is presenting in the sector due to the soaring cost of living and inflationary pressures. NHI stated that Nursing homes are finding it too difficult to stay open in the current climate and many have said if nothing changes they will have to close.
- NHI wrote to Minister Butler re Emergency Planning and designation of nursing home sector as essential service- restrictions for the Winter period. There is a degree of apprehension within the nursing home sector, given the potentially very serious impact a shortage of energy supplies could present for nursing homes entrusted with meeting the health and social care needs of older people.
- Nursing Home Staffing Crisis - request for roundtable. NHI wrote to Minister Butler to highlight the staffing crisis presenting in nursing homes. We stated that it must be considered that if nursing homes are unable to ensure appropriate staffing levels, there is a direct impact on older persons requiring care, as nursing homes will not be in a position to accept admissions from the already crowded acute hospitals.
- NHI wrote a follow on letter to Minister Butler post 8th July meeting thanking her for a constructive meeting and also that we were particularly encouraged by your express commitment to introduce a mechanism to support nursing home residents in the current unprecedented inflationary environment. We note and welcome that final proposals are currently with the finance unit in Department of Health to ensure the sustainability of the sector and maintain service continuity.
- NHI wrote to Minister Butler acknowledging the continuation of the outbreak assistance scheme but did say that it is important to realise staffing pressures remain intensive for nursing homes in managing outbreaks. In this regard, it is disappointing the threshold to support the significantly increased staffing costs has been reduced.
- NHI wrote to Minister Butler outlining that we are aware of national symposium that was to take place 22nd June to “consider the evidence base regarding the health benefits from creative arts and discuss arts and health activities in hospitals that can help deliver better health outcomes for patients and their carers”
