- Letter to Minister Butler re suggested wording for section 8(1)(b) of the proposed revised Mental Health Act. This follows grave concerns psychiatrists have around providing timely treatment and care to the small number of people with severe mental health crisis and illness who need treatment and support under the Act. The current proposed threshold is too high and will have the unintended consequence of potentially depriving those people of appropriate and required treatment.

- Invited Minister Donnelly and Minister Butler to invitation to provide keynote address at our Annual Conference taking place on the 10th November
- NHI issued a letter to Minister Butler in relation to comments she made at a Dáil debate on the 14th December in which the Minister again referred to their being higher dependency levels in residents in public nursing homes. NHI wrote to state that this statement is untrue. Minister referred to a visit to Cherry Orchard hospital and referred to OT, Physio, consultant services and NHI wanted to put on the record that these services are not included under the Fair deal and being paid for by HSE
- To inform the Minister that she made inaccurate comments regarding the dependency of nursing home residents. On RTE Radio One, Drivetime, 8th November 2022, the Minister stated the type of care provided in HSE nursing homes is different to that provided by private and voluntary nursing homes, elaborating: “You have the most complex and vulnerable cases that we would see in HSE nursing homes”. She further stated: “The cases there [HSE nursing homes] are way more complex”.
- NHI wrote to Minister Butler in relation to the proposed Temporary Inflation Payment Scheme for nursing home resident car. We are reverted to inform of bitter disappointment and incredulity with proposed TIPS. For nursing home providers, it is completely removed from facilitating realistic reimbursement of care costs presenting for nursing home care. Simply put, the scheme, as presented, is completely ill fit for purpose and derisory
- NHI wrote a letter to Minister Donnelly and Minister Butler informing them that NHI had lodged a formal State aid complaint with the European Commission on behalf of our members. The State aid complaint relates to the State's operation and administration of the Nursing Home Support Scheme (the Fair Deal Scheme) and the more favourable funding arrangements for public nursing homes, as well as the cross subsidisation of public nursing homes from other parts of the public health service.
- NHI emailed Minister Bulter requesting an urgent pre budget meeting to the unprecedented challenges in the nursing home sector. A number of nursing homes have been forced to close recently, further closures have been announced, there will be more to come unless action is taken by the Minister now. There is a real and immediate threat to the sustainability of the entire sector.
- NHI wrote to Minister Butler outlining our great concern at the crisis presenting in the nursing home sector with 16 nursing homes closing as at 19th October the date of the letter. Four weeks ago, €110 million was announced as part of Budget 2023 as additional support in 2022, given the energy and inflationary pressures presenting for nursing home care and other healthcare providers. It is bitterly disappointing, within the added context of discussions regarding support for nursing home care si
